I was recently told by a forging DK that blacksmithing and jewelcrafting are the best professions for a death knight. Anyone else agree or have other suggestions for tradeskill combo?

My own criteria I am basing "best professions" on:

To make a decent return on investment :) I'm talking Gold here(do any tradeskills make money?)!
Fun, not too much of a pain in the ass to level(no running around leveling a collection skill up)
Usefull to the Death Knight class

BS and JW can fit pretty much any class. Just the combo of having extra sockets (blacksmithing) and then being able to cram those full of decent gems (jewelcrafting) is awesome. JC is also a way to make some money, esp. if you have blacksmithing getting you some of the harder to obtain materials (titansteel). Now of course, you'll need mining to get anywhere with either of these profs, so unless you got an alt that can mine or are loaded with cash to buy materials outright, you might wanna stick to a gathering prof as well.

On a side note, each prof has some benefit that it gives only you, which should be taken into account (skinning = +crit, herbalism = HoT, enchanting = extra enchants, etc.)

So effectively, any prof is useful in one way or the other. As for fun, good luck. Aside from possibly skinning, every prof eventually gets to be a bitch to level, at least towards the end. As for making money, almost any prof can do it, but speaking from experience, Blacksmithing, Inscription, and Jewelcrafting are solid gold (no pun intended) when it comes to making money.

Best i.m.o. is Jewelcrafting and blacksmitting for an DK
but like said elders in post,
you need an alt with mining for mats and prospecting.

I picked up skinning when i started my DK since it would be the easiest to lvl starting at lvl 55. This is what makes it a little more difficult to start a profession. You have to basically back track. So skinning was my only profession and Arctic Fur was still selling pretty well (around 65-75g ea on my server). Then the demand for Arctic Fur dropped and of course the prices dropped. I looked into mining because End Game players always need new gems for their gear. There are guides online for power lvling professions. You have to have some gold to do this, but it wasn't too expensive on my server and it was worth it since I didn't have to run around all over to mine everything. Gems?, I say gems because if you farm Saronite Ore, you can have a JC prosepect, I tip 2g per stack, and you get raw gems from the ore. I usually get around 3 Scarlet Rubies from 8 stacks of Saronite Ore, which sell for 75g ea on my server. I get a lot of greens and around 4 or 5 other blue gems. This is on average, sometimes I get a really bad turn out from the prospecting. I only spend 50mins farming, and I mean 50mins. I can get 8 stacks in that time, fly back to Dal and find a JC in Trade Channel, get the Ore prospected, go to IF and put the high value gems on the AH all in 1hr. I would say that after I sell the gems I put on the AH and any eternals I don't need, I make about 175-225g for that hour of work. I know that is not a huge amount or gold, but it's only 50mins of farming. I spend the rest of the time doing Heroics and guild Raids. I have 3k+ gold right now and I have my epic flight, dual specc ability, cold weather flying, Red Drake from the Wyrmrest Accord, blue gems in all my slots, good enchants on all my enchantable gear, all the flasks I need for Raiding, buff food...ect, ect. I've done pretty well in a short period of time by just spending 50mins of my WoW life farming and the rest gearing up. My last post on here I had a gear rating of about 1350 on wow-heroes.com. Since then I have moved forward a lot and now I have a gear rating of 2148. So for what it's work, two gathering skills has worked out for me pretty well. I'm sure you can find something to replace skinning if your interested in another profession. Oh, don't forget to add in the occasional Titanium nodes and the Titansteel Bars that sell for 80-85g on my server (usually :P). Good luck and have fun!

The best Trade skills for DK are Blacksmith and Jemcrafting, due to the extra gem slots you can get for your armor at high level. Of course, you also benefit from being able to crate some items you can use as well.

For Cash though, I have often found that gathering skills alone are enough. Selling even low level ore on some servers can be very rewarding.

Enchanting is also a good money maker, selling enchants on the AH - if you are farming your own mats, its all profit.

Even if you do not sell enchants, level up enchanting and buy cheap greens or farm them and sell the materials from disenchanting on the AH, often you will make more money just selling the mats over selling the enchants.

Enchanting is also good to have leveled up, as all your soulbound items (or most) can be disenchanted by you for the crystals and the AH will often be more profitable for crystals than the vendor will give you.

As most people leveling up in BC / Northrend just toss the greens they find on the AH for very little - with Disenchanting it is very easy to turn a little investment into huge returns.

Be careful though, you do not want to drive the prices down too much by undercutting beyond a reasonable amount. And also need to be careful not to flood the market, this will also drive the price down to nothing.

If you have mats that are abundant on the AH, stick them in your bank and wait a few days and continue to check the AH when you are near for their current availability and prices.

List yours when market supplies are low and the prices are going up.

Of course, some mats will always be in large supply on the AH.

All good advice. This is mostly how I am making money on my main. I have everything he mentioned except BS between my characters and if you are smart you can make some good coin. Just dont sell anything when the prices are too low. Wait. Patience is the key here.

I started with Mining and BS. I mined ore till my hands fell off and I had enough ore and gems to get BS to 450 and got everything I needed for JC that I could get out of mining then dropped it and picked up JC. anything extra I needed for JC I bought. it was a less costly way of leveling up JC without having mining at the same time. I did spend some money but wasnt as bad. just something to consider if you dont have an alt with mining.

Get two Gathering Professions, imo, and then once you have enough to powerlevel a Crafting Profession, do that.

I know that this isn't DK specific but ohh well. My BS has been stuck at 346/375 for about 3 months now bc I don't feel like doing the branch quests for either Armorsmith or Weaponsmith which after all the time I put into the game would take days. I'm not a fan of back tracking on any video game. Is there a secret way around this mundain crap or do I just have to suck it up and blow some gold on mats for these quests. Would it be more worth my while to pick up Jewelcrafting instead they seem to pull in the most work off of trade even over my Maxed Scribe which on my server is not that much to begin with.

;)

I am loving BS, its a decent money maker once you get into the ICC recipes. Hoping to get my exalted recipes soon.

Actually thinking of dropping JC for something else. Since I have JC on my warlock anyways with a ton of recipes.
